Robert R Patterson - ASN 39211860 - E/513th PIR

Bob Patterson was born on the 21st of December 1924. At 18 years old, he was drafted and he joined the Army on the 16^th of July 1943 at Fort Lewis. He volunteered for the paratroopers and was then assigned to the 1^st Platoon of the E Company, 513^th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

The 513^th PIR was first assigned to the 13^th Airborne Division on August 13, 1943, and then to the 17^th Airborne Division on March 10, 1944, and started preparation for overseas shipment to Europe. The 513^th left the harbor of Boston on August 20, 1944 to arrive in Liverpool on the 28^th of August.

In December 1944, after the Germans started their offensive in the Belgian Ardennes, the 17^th Airborne was alerted and sent to the Bulge.

With his unit, Bob arrived in Monty (Mande-Saint-Etienne) on the 2^nd of January 1945 and participated in the heavy fights of the Dead Man’s Ridge and the other combats of his regiment during the Battle of the Bulge.

On the 24^th of March 1945, Bob was parachuted over Germany across the Rhine during the Operation Varsity. He was wounded twice during the battle, but he remained with the E / 513^th PIR for the duration of the war.

Bob Patterson est né le 21 décembre 1924. A l’âge de 18 ans, il fut appelé sous les drapeaux et il entra à l’armée le 16 juillet 1943 à Fort Lewis. Il se porta volontaire pour les parachutistes et fut assigné au 1^er Platoon de la Compagnie E, 513th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

Le 513th PIR fut d’abord assigné à la 13th Airborne Division le 13 août 1943 et ensuite à la 17th Airborne Division le 10 mars 1944 et se prépara à être envoyé en Europe. Bob et son unité quittèrent Boston le 20 août 1944 pour arriver à Liverpool le 28 août 1944.

En décembre 1944, après le début de l’offensive allemande dans les Ardennes belges, la 17th Airborne fut alertée et envoyée en Belgique.

Avec son unité, Bob arriva à Monty (Mande-Saint-Etienne) le 2 janvier 1945 et participa aux combats sauvages de la Crête de l’Homme Mort et aux autres combats de son régiment pendant la Bataille des Ardennes.

Le 24 mars 1945, Bob fut parachuté au-dessus de l’Allemagne, de l’autre côté du Rhin lors de l’Opération Varsity. Il fut blessé 2 fois pendant la bataille, mais resta avec la E / 513th PIR jusqu’à la fin de la guerre.
