Happy New Year
Our next
walk will happen on the Sunday 19th of March 2017.
The start
and end of the walk will be at Morhet, where was located the divisional
headquarters from the 3rd to the 15th of January 1945.
And we will
have again the honor and privilege to welcome another WW2 Veteran of the 17th
Airborne Division, along with several families of Veterans.
We thank
all who supported the previous walks and helped for the return of the previous
Veterans.

Notre prochaine marche aura lieu le dimanche 19 mars 2017.
Le départ et la fin de la marche se fera à Morhet, où se
trouvait l’état-major divisionnaire du 3 au 15 janvier 1945.
Et nous aurons à nouveau l’honneur et le privilège d’accueillir
un autre Vétéran WW2 de la 17th Airborne Division, ainsi que quelques familles
de Vétérans.
Nous remercions tous ceux qui ont supporté les marche précédentes
et ont aidé au retour des Vétérans précédents.

WW2 Veteran Wayne DeHaven is well arrived / est bien arrivé
This morning (Thursday 17th
of March) WW2 Veteran Wayne DeHaven is well arrived in Brussels with his son Wayne
Jr. He is very fine and is looking forward to his journey in Belgium and to the
walk.
Again, many thanks to all the participants
who will be present on Sunday and to all who donate. It is thanks to you that Wayne
is able to come back in Europe.
Ce matin (jeudi 17 mars), le Vétéran WW2 Wayne DeHaven est bien arrivé à
Bruxelles avec son fils Wayne Jr. Il va très bien, est très content de commencer
son séjour en Belgique et est impatient d’être présent à la marche.
Encore une fois, merci
beaucoup à tous les participants qui seront présents ce dimanche et à tous ceux
qui ont fait une donation. C'est grâce à vous si Wayne est de retour en Europe.

Wayne
DeHaven, 1943-1944
Wayne H. DeHaven (Senior), naquit le 15 juin 1923 à Saint-Paul,
Minnesota, États-Unis d'Amérique. Il servit dans la compagnie F du 513th
Parachute Infantry Regiment de la 17th Airborne Division, pendant la Seconde
Guerre mondiale.
Il se porta volontaire pour les troupes aéroportées et s'entraina à Fort
Benning, Camp Mackall et Camp Forrest (1943-1944). Après avoir suivi un cours
de 175 heures pour opérateur-radio spécialisé, il devint le radio personnel
(grade Tec5) du Capitaine Reynolds, officier commandant la compagnie et
rejoignit ainsi l'État-Major de cette dernière.
Wayne fut envoyé, par mer, au Royaume-Uni le 20 août 1945 et, par air, à
Mourmelon, France, le 24 décembre 1944. Le jour suivant, il prit position à
Stenay, le long de la rivière Meuse pour endiguer d'autres tentatives de
percées allemandes à travers les lignes alliées. Wayne entra dans la
"Bataille des Ardennes" le 3 janvier 1945 lorsque son unité prit
position à Mande-Saint-Etienne à l'ouest de Bastogne, Belgique.
Le premier choc du 513th PIR eut lieu un jour plus tard face à une
féroce et sévère résistance blindée allemande. Les pertes furent élevées,
forçant la compagnie à se retirer. Elle fut relevée et envoyé dans les Bois de
Fragotte et Bois des Valets, au sud du village.
Après réorganisation, le 7 janvier, l'autre mouvement visa à s'emparer
des collines et des champs au sud de Flamièrge un endroit qui allait bientôt
devenir la "Crête de l'Homme mort". La progression se déroula bien
mais les hommes furent soumis à un pilonnage d'artillerie et de chars
allemands.
La radio SCR-300 que Wayne portait sur son dos fut détruite par des
éclats d'obus, ainsi que son casque. Souffrant de blessures à la tête et à d’autres
endroits, il fut évacué vers les lignes arrières et ne connut plus d'engagement
au combat. Il fut soigné dans plusieurs hôpitaux militaires en Belgique, France
et au Royaume-Uni jusqu'à la mi-avril 1945 lorsqu'il revint aux USA pour être
démobilisé avec les honneurs en octobre 1945.
Wayne H. DeHaven (Sr.) was born on June
15, 1923 in Saint-Paul, Minnesota, United States of America. He served in Fox
Company, 513th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 17th Airborne Division during WWII.
After volunteering for the paratroopers,
he trained at Fort Benning, Camp Mackall and Camp Forrest (1943-1944). Having
completed 175 hours of training to be a specialized radio-operator, he became
the personal radioman (rank Tec5) of Captain Reynolds, Commanding Officer of
the company, and so joined the Company Headquarters.
DeHaven was sent by sea to England on
August 20, 1944, then on to Mourmelon, France by air on December 24, 1944. The
day after, he took position at Stenay along the Meuse River to prevent any
further German penetrations into the Allied lines. Wayne entered "Battle
of the Bulge" on January 3, 1945 when his unit took position at
Mande-Saint-Etienne west of Bastogne, Belgium.
The first clash of the 513th PIR
happened one day later against a fierce and severe German armored resistance.
Casualties were high, forcing the company to pull back. His unit was relieved and
sent into the woods Bois de Fragotte and Bois des Valets, South of the village.
After reorganization, on January 7, the
next move aimed to take the high grounds and open fields South of Flamièrge, a place
soon to become the "Dead Man's Ridge". Progression was good, but the
men fell under heavy German artillery and tank shelling. Wayne's SCR300 that he
carried on his back was destroyed by shrapnel, as well as his helmet. Suffering
wounds on his head and body, he was evacuated to the rear lines and was never
involved in combat anymore. He recovered in several military hospitals in
Belgium, France and United Kingdom up to mid-April 1945 when he got back to the
USA to be honorably discharged in October 1945.
