Since 2009, the first “Dead Man’s Ridge Walk”,
hundreds of you have walked to pay tribute to the soldiers of the 17th Airborne
Division.
The purpose of the “Dead Man’s Ridge Walk” is
to honor the men of the 17th Airborne, but also to raise funds to allow
Veterans of this division to return to Europe to their battlefields.
Thanks to your participation in the annual walks
and our various actions (dinners, etc.), your donations, your merchandising
purchases, your gifts and any form of support, several Veterans of the 17th
Airborne, as well as a Veteran’s escort (usually a family member), were able to
return to Europe. For most of these Veterans, this was their first and only
return since 1945. Thanks to all of you, these Veterans and their companions
traveled with all expenses paid (planes, accommodation, meals, transport, etc.)
and were entitled to a stay between 12 and 15 days in Europe.

For the members of their families, coming to
the places where their ancestors fought is an unforgettable experience. Not
only, it allows them to understand what these men lived and had to endure to
liberate our countries. But it also allows them to realize that here in Europe
we have not forgotten their sacrifice and that we are eternally grateful to
them. Whether in Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands but also in Germany, they
have met countless people who have expressed unwavering gratitude to our
liberators.
This is also true for all the "Scions of the
17th Airborne", the descendants of 17th Airborne soldiers, who have come
to Europe three times for our Dead Man's Ridge Walk, in 2015, in 2017 and for
this edition 2021.
Likewise, a large number of authorities,
organizations, associations, museums, owners, businesses and citizens of
Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Germany have trusted us and did
everything possible to welcome these Veterans, their families and the Scions.
In their own way, they also helped make their trips to Europe extraordinary and
unforgettable.
This year, we had the tremendous honor of
welcoming Veterans Gilbert Herrera and Richard Weaver, both 97 years old.
Chances are, they are the last Veterans to return for the Dead Man's Ridge
Walk. Nevertheless, we will continue to organize the walk every year in March
so as not to forget the men of the 17th Airborne Division.
On behalf of our association, the Veterans of
the Dead Man’s Ridge Walk, their families and the Scions of the 17th Airborne,
we thank you all for your continued support. You are all part of the big family
of the Dead Man's Ridge Walk and don't forget that it is also thanks to you,
whatever your action, that these 12 Veterans have had the opportunity to return
to where they sacrificed their youth for Freedom.

marche “Dead Man’s Ridge Walk”, vous êtes des centaines à avoir marché pour
rendre hommage aux soldats de la 17th Airborne Division.
Le but de la “Dead Man’s Ridge
Walk” est d’honorer les hommes de la 17th Airborne, mais également de récolter
des fonds pour permettre à des Vétérans de cette division de revenir en Europe
sur les lieux de leurs combats.
Grâce à votre participation
aux marches annuelles et à nos différentes actions (soupers, etc.), à vos dons,
à vos achats de merchandising, à vos cadeaux et à toute forme de soutien,
plusieurs Vétérans de la 17th Airborne, ainsi qu’un accompagnant par Vétéran
(en général un membre de la famille), ont pu revenir en Europe. Pour la plupart
de ces Vétérans, ce fut leur premier et unique retour depuis 1945. Grâce à vous
tous, ces Vétérans et leurs accompagnants ont voyagé tous frais payés (avions,
logements, repas, transports, etc.) et ont eu droit à un séjour entre 12 et 15
jours en Europe.

Pour les membres de leurs familles,
venir sur les lieux où leurs aïeux ont combattu, est une expérience
inoubliable. Non seulement, cela leur permet de comprendre ce que ces hommes
ont vécus et ont dû endurer pour libérer nos contrées. Mais cela leur permet
également de se rendre compte, qu’ici en Europe, nous n’avons pas oublié leur
sacrifice et que nous leur sommes éternellement reconnaissant. Que ce soit en
Belgique, au Luxembourg, aux Pays-Bas mais aussi en Allemagne, ils ont
rencontré un nombre incalculable de personnes qui ont exprimé une gratitude
indéfectible envers nos libérateurs.
C’est également vrai pour
tous les "Scions of the 17th Airborne", les descendants de soldats de
la 17th Airborne, qui sont venus en Europe à trois reprises pour notre Dead
Man’s Ridge Walk, en 2015, en 2017 et pour cette édition 2021.
De même, un grand nombre
d’autorités, d’organismes, d’associations, de musées, de propriétaires, de
commerces et de citoyens de Belgique, du Luxembourg, des Pays-Bas et
d’Allemagne nous ont fait confiance et ont mis tout en œuvre pour accueillir
ces Vétérans, leurs familles et les Scions. A leur façon, ils ont aussi aidé à
rendre leurs voyages en Europe extraordinaires et inoubliables.
Cette année, nous avons eu
l’infime honneur d’accueillir les Vétérans Gilbert Herrera et Richard Weaver,
tous les deux âgés de 97 ans. Il est fort probable qu’ils soient les derniers
Vétérans à être revenus pour la Dead Man’s Ridge Walk. Néanmoins, nous
continuerons à organiser la marche chaque année en mars pour ne pas oublier les
hommes de la 17th Airborne Division.
