Voici la carte de la marche.
Comme annoncé, cette année, nous marcherons
dans le secteur où combattit le 193rd Glider Infantry Regiment.
Ce secteur fut aussi le théâtre de féroces
combats livrés par le 502nd Parachute Intantry Regiment et le 1st Battalion /
401st Glider Infantry Regiment de la 101st Airborne Division.
La marche partira de Champs pour rejoindre la
ligne de départ de l’attaque du 2nd Battalion /193rd Glider Infantry Regiment
du 7 janvier 1945 vers son objectif : un bois à l’est de Flamisoul et au
nord de Mande-St-Etienne. Lors de cette attaque, le 193rd GIR perdit 4
officiers et 58 hommes tués et de nombreux autres blessés !
Nous reviendrons ensuite à Champs pour l’arrêt
de midi avant de repartir par les petits chemins pour rejoindre la route
d’avance du 193rd GIR du 13 janvier 1945 vers Givry et Bertogne qui passait par
l’objectif du 7 janvier 1945. De là, nous emprunterons des chemins autour de
Rouette avant de revenir à Champs.
Here is the map of the walk.
As advertised, this year, we will
walk in the area where the 193rd Glider Infantry Regiment fought.
This area was also the theater of
ferocious fights of the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment and the 1st Battalion
/ 401st Glider Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division.
The walk will leave from Champs
to reach the departure line of the attack of the 2nd Battalion/193rd Glider
Infantry Regiment on the 7th of January 1945 towards his objective: a wood east
of Flamisoul and north of Mande-St-Etienne. During this attack, the 193rd GIR lost
4 officers and 58 men killed and many more wounded!
We will then come back to Champs
for the lunch before walking again on the paths to reach the route of advance
of the 193rd GIR on the 13th January 1945 towards Givry and Bertogne, passing
on the way through the 7th of January 1945’s objective. From there, we will
walk on the paths around Rouette before coming back to Champs.

We can already tell you that a WW2 Veteran will come back: Melvin Lagoon from the 193rd Glider Infantry Regiment. It is the first time he is coming back since the war.

WW2 Veteran John Schumacher is well arrived / est bien arrivé
A last word before leaving to the Houmont area to prepare the walk. This morning (Thursday 22nd of March) WW2 Veteran John Schumacher is well arrived in Brussels. He is very fine and is looking forward to his journey in Belgium and to the walk.
Again, many thanks to all participants who will be present on Sunday. It is thanks to you that John has been able to come back over here for the first time since the war.
Un dernier mot avant de partir pour la région d'Houmont pour préparer la marche. Ce matin (mardi 22 mars), le Vétéran WW2 John Schumacher est bien arrivé à Bruxelles. Il va très bien, est très content de commencer son séjour en Belgique et est impatient d'être présent à la marche.
Encore une fois, merci beaucoup à tous les participants qui seront présents ce dimanche. C'est grâce à vous si John est de retour ici pour la première fois depuis la guerre.

Comme annoncé, un Vétéran de la 17th Airborne Division sera présent à la marche : John J. Schumacher. C’est la première fois qu’il revient depuis la guerre.
C’est grâce à tous les participants que le retour de John Schumacher peut se réaliser. Comme annoncé, tous les bénéfices de la marche servent intégralement à financer son retour. Nous vous remercions d’avance pour votre participation.
As announced, a Veteran from the 17th Airborne Division will be present at the walk: John J. Schumacher. It is the first time he is coming back since the war.
It is thanks to all the participants that John Schumacher’s return can become a reality. As written in the flyer, all the benefits of the walk are used in their entirety to finance his trip. We thank you in advance for your participation.
John J. Schumacher 2012
John J. Schumacher was born in Coon Rapids, Iowa, on the 28th of March 1925, of German immigrant parents. At 18 years old, he entered the Army on January 25, 1944, did his basic training at Camp Dodge (Iowa) and at Camp Blanding (Florida), than passed through Camp Shanks (New York) before boarding on July 15, 1944, to Scotland. On August 30, John arrived at Chiseldon, Great Britain, where he joined the 17th Airborne Division in the Headquarters Company – 1st Battalion – 194th Glider Infantry Regiment (HQ/1/194th GIR). John served in the 81-mm mortar platoon and the training continued.
On December 26, he arrived at Mourmelon, France, and was transferred to Beaumont-en-Argonne where his unit stayed in defensive position near the Belgian border. On January 2, 1945, he arrived at Neuchâteau, Belgium and from there continue on foot in the snow to Magerotte. John was engaged in combat for the first time on January 4, 1945, at Houmont. The contact with the enemy was extremely violent. Till January 12, several attacks and counter-attacks succeeded against the German tanks to reach Flamièrge. The 194th GIR reached the Houffalize area and the north of Luxembourg before taking defensive positions along the Our River.
On February 12, 1945, John arrived at Châlons-sur-Marne, France, and prepared for the operation “Varsity”. He was transferred to the new ‘D’ company, always in the 81-mm mortar platoon and became a jeep driver. On March 24, 1945, the glider transporting John’s jeep landed north-east of Wesel, Germany, the objective being the Issel Canal. During the ensuing campaign, John passed through Münster, Hamm, Mülheim and ended the war with the occupation of Duisburg.
On August 12, 1945, John left Cherbourg for New York. The Japanese surrender prevented him the Pacific front. John was honorably discharged on the 29th of January 1946 without being wounded in combat.
Private First Class John J. Schumacher participated in the following campaigns: Ardennes-Alsace", "Rhineland" and "Central Europe". He is entitled the following decorations: Glider Badge, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Medal, European - African - Middle Eastern Theater Medal with one Bronze Arrowhead and three Bronze Stars, Victory Medal.

John J. Schumacher est né à Coon Rapids dans l'état de l'Iowa le 28 mars 1925 de parents immigrés allemands. Âgé de 18 ans, il entra en service le 25 janvier 1944 et effectua son entraînement de base à Camp Dodge (Iowa) et Camp Blanding (Floride) puis transita par Camp Shanks (État de New York) avant d'embarquer le 15 juillet à destination de l'Écosse. Le 30 août, John arriva à Chiseldon, au Royaume-Uni, où il intégra la 17th Airborne Division au sein de la Headquarters Company - 1st Battalion - 194th Glider Infantry Regiment (HQ/1/194th GIR). L'entraînement se poursuivit pour John qui servit dès lors dans le peloton des mortiers de 81mm.
Le 26 décembre, il arriva à Mourmelon, en France, et gagna Beaumont-en-Argonne où son unité resta en défense près de la frontière belge. Le 2 janvier 1945, il passa par Neufchâteau, en Belgique, et delà rejoignit Magerotte, à pied dans la neige. John fut engagé au combat pour la première fois le 4 janvier à Houmont. Le contact avec l'ennemi fut extrêmement violent. Jusqu'au 12 janvier, de très nombreuses attaques et contre-attaques face aux blindés allemands se succédèrent pour atteindre Flamièrge. Le 194th GIR atteignit Houffalize et le nord du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg avant d'être posté le long de l'Our.
Le 12 février, John rejoignit Châlons-sur-Marne, en France, et se prépara à l'opération "Varsity". Il passa à la compagnie D, toujours dans un peloton de mortiers lourds et devint conducteur d'une jeep. Le 24 mars, le planeur transportant John se posa au nord-est de Wesel, en Allemagne, l'objectif étant la prise du canal de l'Issel. Au cours de la campagne qui suivit, John passa par Münster, Hamm, Mülheim et finit la guerre en occupant Duisburg.
Le 12 août, John quitta Cherbourg à destination de New York. La reddition japonaise lui évita le front du Pacifique. John fut démobilisé le 29 janvier 1946 sans avoir été blessé au combat.
Le Private First Class John J. Schumacher est crédité des campagnes "Ardennes-Alsace", "Rhineland" et "Central Europe". Il est titulaire des décorations suivantes : Glider Badge, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Medal, European - African - Middle Eastern Theater Medal with one Bronze Arrowhead and three Bronze Stars, Victory Medal.
