Lynn Aas, end 1944

Le Private Lynn W. AAS, né en 1921, s'engagea le 18 août 1942 à Grand Folks, North Dakota. Il intégra l'Army Specialized Training Program où il suivit une formation technique militaire poussée. À la fin du printemps 1944, lorsque ce programme fut arrêté, Lynn rejoignit la compagnie D du 193rd Glider Infantry Regiment de la 17th Airborne Division, alors à l'entraînement à Camp Forrest, Tennessee. En août 1944, il arriva à Camp Chiseldon dans le sud du Royaume-Uni. Lorsque les armées allemandes lancèrent leur offensive dans les Ardennes belges, sa division fut envoyée d'urgence à l'ouest de Bastogne. Le 7 janvier 1945, le premier jour de combat de Lynn fut effroyable : les rudes conditions hivernales et la résistance de l'ennemi causèrent de lourdes pertes à son unité. Pendant six jours, entre Mande-Saint-Étienne et Champs, le régiment fit face aux Allemands avant que la situation ne se débloque. Lynn progressa alors jusqu'au Grand-Duché de Luxembourg, où il prit position devant la rivière Our et la ligne Siegfried, à la fin janvier. Du début février à la mi-mars 1945, au cours du repos, de la préparation et de restructuration de la division à Camp Mourmelon, France, le régiment de Lynn fut dissout. Il passa à la compagnie A du 194th Glider Infantry Regiment. Le Private First Class AAS embarqua le 24 mars 1945 à bord d'un planeur et participa à l'opération "Varsity". Le lendemain, il fut blessé au bras gauche par un éclat d'obus et fut évacué. Il ne retourna pas au sein de son unité et regagna les États-Unis, en prévision des combats sur le front du Pacifique. La reddition japonaise l'en dispensa et il fut démobilisé honorablement en novembre 1945.

Private Lynn AAS, born in 1921, enlisted on August 18, 1942 at Grand Folks, North Dakota. He applied to the Army Specialized Training Program to follow an advanced military technical formation. At the end of spring 1944, when the program was stopped, Lynn joined D Company, 193rd Glider Infantry Regiment, 17th Airborne Division, which was training at Camp Forrest, Tennessee. In August 1944, he arrived at Camp Chiseldon in Southern United Kingdom. When the German armies released their offensive in the Belgian Ardennes, his division was rushed in emergency to the west of Bastogne. On January 7th, 1945, Lynn's very first combat day was frightening : the miserable winter conditions and the enemy resistance caused heavy casualties to Lynn's unit. During six days, between Mande-Sainte-Etienne and Champs, the regiment faced the Germans before the situation cleared out. At the end of January, Lynn reached the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg where he took position along the Our River, facing the Siegfried Line. From early February till mid-March 1945, during the period of rest, training and reorganization of the 17th Airborne Division at Camp Mourmelon, France, Lynn's regiment was dismissed. He was transferred to A Company, 194th Glider Infantry Regiment. On March 24, 1945, Private First Class AAS boarded a glider and took part in the operation "Varsity". The next day, he was wounded at left arm by a shell fragment and evacuated. He didn't join his unit back and was on the way to the United States to be sent to the Pacific Theater of Operation afterward. The Japanese surrender avoided Lynn to fight again and he was honorably discharged in November 1945.
