Thank you - Merci !

Un très grand merci à tous les participants ! N’oubliez pas que c’est grâce à vous que Bob a pu revenir sur les lieux de ses combats et il en est très heureux. Voir autant de monde à la marche l’a fortement impressionné. Merci !

A very big thank you to all the participants! Do not forget it is thanks to you that Bob has been able to come back where he fought and he is very happy of it. To see so many people at the walk impressed him a lot. Thank you!

Et un merci très spécial à Bob Patterson, son fils Brian et Eric Esposito qui représentait Jack Macauley son grand-père (HQ/2/513). Ils ont fait de cette marche un événement extraordinaire.

194th Glider Infantry Regiment

550th Infantry Airborne Battalion

Le 19 décembre 1944, la 17th Airborne Division, stationnée en Angleterre, reçoit l’ordre de faire mouvement vers Mourmelon, France. Début janvier 1945, elle est envoyée au sud-ouest de Bastogne pour relever la 11th Armored Division. Le 194th Glider Infantry Regiment et le 550th Infantry Airborne Battalion qui lui est attaché se déploient sur le flanc gauche de la division (Pinsamont et Houmont) et le 513th Parachute Infantry Regiment sur le flanc droit (Bois des Valets et Mande-Saint-Etienne). Les 193rd Glider Infantry Regiment et 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment sont gardés en réserve.
Le 3 janvier 1945, le 550th est en position devant Houmont et le 2nd Battalion du 194th devant Pinsamont. Le 1st Battalion du 194th reste en réserve après avoir reconnu le Bois de Magery. Le P.C. du 194th est établi à Magerotte. 
Le 4 janvier au matin, la 17th Airborne attaque. Elle a pour objectif Flamièrge et la rivière Ourthe. Sur le flanc droit, le 513th attaque vers Flamièrge en passant par la crête qui sera plus tard surnommée “Dead Man’s Ridge” (la Crête de l’Homme mort). Sur le flanc gauche, l’attaque commence à 08h15. Le 2/194th et le 550th attaquent vers les petits villages de Laval, Rechimont, Hubermont, Millomont, et Renuamont. Les premiers villages sont atteints vers 10h00 et les autres dans l’après-midi, malgré une résistance allemande importante. Pendant ce temps, le 1/194th occupe des positions défensives devant Houmont et le 507th occupe le secteur de Pinsamont. Au soir, le P.C. du 194th est déplacé à Houmont. Pendant la nuit, les Allemands contre-attaquent férocement avec des blindés et de l’infanterie. A Renuamont, les compagnies B et C du 550th sont submergées par les Allemands et de nombreux soldats sont faits prisonniers. Au petit matin du 5 janvier, les survivants des 2/194th et 550th se replient vers Houmont. Les Allemands ont repris tous les villages, ainsi que Rechrival. Le 550th a fort souffert et est placé en réserve du 194th.
A 08h15, le 7 janvier, le 1/194th attaque en direction des villages, suivi par le 2/194th. Après 2 heures et demie d’intenses combats, le 1/194th atteint Millomont. Les Allemands sont en force dans les villages. Les combats sont féroces, les pertes importantes et les Allemands contreattaquent. Dans l’après-midi, les 1/194th et 2/194th sont forcés de se retirer. Le 2/194th recule jusqu’au village de Rechrival et le 1/194th établit des positions défensives sur les hauteurs à droite du 2/194th. Le 507th avance et se positionne à gauche du 2/194th. Le 8 janvier, les Allemands attaquent durement les positions du 507th à gauche de Rechrival.
Du 9 au 11 janvier, le secteur du 194th est plutôt calme. Dans la nuit du 10 au 11, les Allemands commencent à se retirer des villages, laissant une arrière-garde. Des contacts sont établis avec la 87th Infantry Division sur la gauche. Le 507th quitte ses positions le 11 janvier et remplace le 513th à Mande-Sainte-Etienne. Le 12 dans la matinée, des patrouilles effectuent des reconnaissances vers les villages et essuient quelques tirs allemands. En début d’après-midi, le 1/194th avance jusque Renuamont et continue jusqu’à la colline 510 dominant Flamièrge. Ce même jour, le 507th prend Flamizoulle et la 87th Division atteint Fosset sur la gauche de la division.
Le 13 janvier, le 1/194th entre dans Flamièrge. Les Allemands offrent peu de résistance. Dans l’après-midi, le 1/194th atteint les bois au nord de Flamièrge et le 2/194th est en position entre Tronle et Salle. Un peu plus tard, le P.C. du 194th est installé à Tronle. Le 550th se positionne sur la colline 510. Dans l’après-midi du 14 janvier, le 1/194th entre dans Givroulle, tandis que le 2/194th avance vers Salle et Wigny. Le 550th est à Tronle. Le 194th reste en repos jusqu’au 17 janvier quand il reçoit l’ordre de faire mouvement vers Wicourt, un petit village au sud d’Houffalize.

On December 19, 1944 the 17th Airborne Division, who was in England, got the order to make movement to Mourmelon, France. Beginning January 1945, the division is sent to the south-west of Bastogne to take over the 11th Armored Division. The 194th Glider Infantry Regiment and the 550th Infantry Airborne Battalion attached to the 194th deploy on the left flank of the division (Pinsamont and Houmont) and the 513th Parachute Infantry Division on the right flank (Bois des Valets and Mande-Saint-Etienne). The 193rd Glider Infantry Regiment and 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment remain in reserve.
On January 3, 1945 the 550th is in position near Houmont and the 2nd Battalion of the 194th near Pinsamont. After clearing the Bois de Magery, the 1st Battalion of the 194th is held in reserve. The 194th C.P. is set up in Magerotte.
On January 4 in the morning, the 17th Airborne attacks. The objectives are Flamièrge and the Ourthe River. On the right flank, the 513th attacks towards Flamièrge passing on the ridge that will be later called the “Dead Man’s Ridge”. On the left flank, the attacks begin at 08h15. The 2/194th and the 550th attack towards the little villages of Laval, Rechimont, Hubermont, Millomont and Renuamont. They arrive at the first villages near 10h00 and in the others in the afternoon, despite a strong German resistance. In the meanwhile, the 1/194th occupies defensive positions near Houmont and the 507th occupies the area of Pinsamont. In the evening, the 194th C.P. is moved to Houmont. During the night, the Germans counter-attack furiously with tanks and infantry. In Renuamont, B and C companies of the 550th are overwhelmed by the Germans and many soldiers are taken prisoners. In the early morning of January 5, the 2/194th and 550th survivors are pulling back to Houmont. The Germans have retaken all the villages, and occupy Rechrival. The 550th suffered heavy losses and will stay in reserve of the 194th.
At 08h15 on January 7, the 1/194th attacks towards the villages, followed by the 2/194th. After 2 hours and a half of intense fighting, the 1/194th reaches Millomont. The Germans are in strength in the villages. The fighting is ferocious, the losses are heavy and the Germans counterattack. In the afternoon, the 1/194th and the 2/194th are forced to pull back. The 2/194th moves back to Rechrival and the 1/194th establishes defensive positions on the high grounds at the right of the 2/194th. The 507th advances to the left of the 2/194th. On January 8, the Germans attack hardly the positions of the 507th at the left of Rechrival. 
From the 9th to the 11th of January, the 194th area is rather quite. In the night from the 10th to the 11th, the
Germans begin to pull back from the villages, leaving only a rear guard. Contacts are established with the 87th Infantry Division on the left. The 507th leaves his positions on January 11 and replace the 513th in Mande-Saint-Etienne. In the morning of the 12th, patrols go in reconnaissance towards the villages and receive light German fire. Beginning afternoon, the 1/194th advances towards Renuamont and goes further to the hill 510 above Flamièrge. The same day, the 507th takes Flamizoulle and the 87th Infantry reaches Fosset on the left of the division.
On January 13, the 1/194th enters Flamièrge. The Germans offer only light resistance. In the afternoon, the 1/194th reaches the woods north of Flamièrge and the 2/194th is in position between Tronle and Salle. Later, the 194th C.P. moves to Tronle and the 550th on the hill 510. On the 14th afternoon, the 1/194th enters in Givroulle, while the 2/194th advances towards Salle and Wigny. The 550th is in Tronle. The 194th rests in the area till the 17th of January when an order is received to move to Wicourt, a little village south of Houffalize.

Registrations – Inscriptions

After the request of several people, we are lengthening the pre-registration till the Friday 11th of March.
The registrations for the walk will of course be possible the day of the walk, Sunday 20th of March, on your arrival at Flamièrge at the registration desk in the village’s house.
But if possible, thank you to let us know about your participation. Thank you.

Vu la demande de plusieurs personnes, nous allongeons le délai des préinscriptions jusqu’au vendredi 11 mars.
Les inscriptions à la marche seront bien entendu possibles le jour de la marche, soit le dimanche 20 mars, lors de votre arrivée à Flamièrge au bureau d’inscription dans la maison de village.
